Section 08 of 09
How this supports safe practice
A strong foundation in normal supports safe clinical practice in several important ways.
It reduces false alarms
When you know what is normal, you do not refer benign findings unnecessarily. This preserves specialist resources and reduces patient anxiety.
It sharpens detection of true abnormality
Abnormality stands out against a well-established baseline. Without the baseline, everything looks potentially abnormal — or nothing does.
It enables meaningful comparison
"This lesion differs from the patient's other naevi" is a powerful clinical observation. But it requires knowing what their other naevi look like.
It builds appropriate confidence
Confidence in dermoscopy comes from knowing when to be reassured, not just when to be concerned. Knowing normal is reassuring — for you and for your patients.
